Monologue 19: "Lies" ( dramatic / fantastical )

You must gain respect and fear from a rival who has just won control of your colony.

LIES (any gender, mid twenties on up)

Lemme tell you something about your new job. You are going to be lying.

Do yourself a favor and don’t debate me on that. At least not until you’ve run the colony for a full month.

There will be many times when you will have to say: “It will never happen again. Everyone is safe.” And in fact, you don’t know that. Those... those things will likely come back. You can’t know when and you can’t know how. It is not possible. Preventing an attack is not your job.

Your job is to lie.

If the your colony feels safe, they will keep building. If they feel safe they will keep planting. And if they keep building, keep planting, then when the next attack comes, most will survive. And so on...

Attack after attack...
Disaster after disaster...
Lie after lie...
Most after most after most will survive... and by then there will be so many of us at that we will conquer this terrain.

So go and celebrate. Election night is the best. But keep a level head. When they’re hooting and hollering about my loss, how I was the incompetent one, I was the liar, just remember... remember that they are now in your hands.

Artistic Director Matt Haynes presents a new short monologue every day, 2016. The majority of these are gender-flexible and usable for teenagers on up. Feel free to grab any of these for your audition... or just to perform for fun. If you need to trim the beginnings or endings for time, go ahead, but please do not alter the text itself.
